A Proclamation

National Leadership Council

Whereas, the Government of the United States of America, through the Department of Homeland Security, has announced that the present designation of the Deferred Enforced Departure(DED)  for Liberian nationals may not be extended; and

Whereas, the National Leadership Council of the Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas is cognizant of the perils of the non-extension of the DED designation to the success of the budding democracy in Liberia and to the economic revival of our war-ravaged nation; and

Whereas, the Government of Liberia has consistently maintained that the conditions engendered by the 14-year war infringe on the ability of the country to deal with any mass influx of Liberians from the United States; and

Whereas, the National Leadership Council continues to engage the stakeholders in search of a lasting and efficacious resolution of the problems relative to the immigration status of Liberians on the DED; and

Whereas, through deliberations with supporters of this cause, it remains evident that a concerted and sustained action on the part of all Liberians is crucial to securing a panacea to this problem; and

Whereas, the leadership of ULAA offers no guarantee that its efforts will lead to the granting of Permanent Residency for Liberians on DED; and

Whereas, ULAA accordingly believes that it behooves all Liberians on DED to concomitantly seek other means of legalizing their status to avoid possible deportation in March, 2009; and

Whereas, ULAA reaffirms its commitment to leading the cause for the acquisition of Permanent Residency Status for all Liberians on DED; and

Cognizant that  accomplishing this goal requires financial resources, ULAA calls upon all Liberians on DED, ULAA member chapters, Liberian organizations, ULAA Partners, immigration advocacy groups, friends of Liberia, etc., to contribute financially through the making of donations by way of “PayPal” on ULAA’s  website at www.ulaaliberia.net and through other means of convenience; and

Now, therefore, I, Emmanuel S. Wettee, National President of the Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA), on mandate of the National Leadership Council, do hereby proclaim the months running from April 2008 to March 2009, as  “National Immigration Advocacy Months”.

Accordingly, all Liberians are called upon to demonstrate actions by requesting their respective Congressional members as well as all and sundry in the corridors of power in the United States of America to support the Liberian Immigration Bills and all ULAA immigration initiatives appertaining thereto.

In witness whereof, I hereunto set my hand and cause the great seal of the Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas to be affixed at the headquarters of the Union, in Washington,  District of Columbia, this 19th day of April 2008.
